The Core at Corby Cube developed a Young Programmers scheme allowing 13 young people to curate and promote a new recurring strand of film programme, focusing on world and independent cinema.
The group selected two films to present in three screenings – the low-budget British war film Kajaki and independent British drama X+Y. Identifying who these films would appeal to most, they decided to promote Kajaki as a fundraiser for Help for Heroes and to add a second screening for X+Y, making this an autism friendly screening.
This screening took place in early May and the young people ensured that the environment and experience was appropriate for those on the spectrum. The group developed "social stories" for customers to download in advance of the screening and took charge of making changes to the front of house areas for the screening. There is strong indication that this pilot will lead to regular autism friendly screenings at The Core in the future.
